When you take part in your IELTS Speaking test, your examiner may ask, “Do you like animals?”
It’s an easy question to answer.
Read on for tips on how to prepare for this question and 20 sample answers (go straight to the answers here).
If you like animals, you can say you do, and then add a sentence or two to explain your answer.
One animal, or type of animal, that you really like
If you like wild animals or pets (pets or farm animals)
Document the animals you have seen
Any pet you would like to have (traditional or exotic)
Anything you know about the life and habitats of animals
Anything you know about endangered animals
Don’t you love Animals?
If you don’t like animals, you can talk about them:
Why don’t you love yourself
Dangerous animals you’ve seen at the zoo, or on TV
Someone you know who loves animals
For other questions, just remember to KISS (Keep it short and simple).
In the first part, focus on responding quickly and smoothly, without hesitation.
Your answer (say ‘yes’ or ‘no’)
Explain your answer, or add one or two details (one or two more sentences)
Stop talking (let the examiner know you are ready for the next question)
There are a few reasons why you should keep your answers short in the first part:
Your examiner has only four to five minutes to ask you 10-12 questions

You can use them for ideas in your answer.
‘Yes, I do’ Answers
I love animals very much.
I love animals very much.
I really like animals like baby chicks and kittens, or lambs, and pandas or little tiger cubs.
I always enjoyed going to the zoo and seeing all the elephants and orangutans and other animals.
I love learning about their habitats and how they live in the wild.
3. Yes, I like animals.
I have a pet dog and he is lovely to have around the house.
4. Well, actually, only last month I watched a documentary about marine animals.
5 Yes, I think animals are great and I think we should look after them and protect them.
There are many endangered animals in the wild that are almost extinct, and that is very sad.
I love how independent and cute cats are.
I would love to have cats as pets one day.
7. I like animals because they are innocent and true to their nature, and some of them look really beautiful, like wild tigers and eagles.
8. Yes, I think I like animals.
I really enjoy animated movies where animals come to life, like Zootopia.
My kids love those kinds of movies too.
9. Yes, of course, who doesn’t love animals?
I really like birds, because they sound happy when they fly outside my window in the morning.
I always wanted to fly like a bird.
Yes, I really like animals that help people to do things, like dogs that see through the eyes of blind people, or those dolphins that help sailors at sea.
I like farm animals, like cows and sheep and ducks and goats, etc.
I think they are funny and I would like to visit the farm to see them up close and feed them.
Well, I grew up in the countryside, so we always had a lot of animals and I helped take care of them.
‘Type’ Answers
I like animals, sometimes.
I don’t even have pets.
I think I like wild animals, like polar bears.
They are big and dangerous and live alone, hunting in really cold places.
I’m not a big fan of animals, although I like dogs because they are friendly.
I don’t like cats because I was scratched by a cat when I was very young and it scared the hell out of me.
I love wildlife, but only on TV.
It is fun to watch how lions and bears live in the wild, but I would not like to see any of them in real life.
‘No, I Don’t’ Answers
No, to be honest with you, I don’t like animals at all.
But my kids love learning about animals and going to the zoo.
I just love people.
No, I don’t like animals at all, except to eat them.
I’m a big meat eater and I love beef, pork, chicken, seafood, any animal based food, really.
No, I hate animals.
I grew up on a farm and had to work with animals all day and I hated it.
Now that I live in the city I don’t want to be around animals anymore.
You can see how many different types of answers you can give.
It doesn’t matter what you say, as long as you speak fast, and don’t make (many) mistakes.
For some questions, just say the first thing that pops into your head, and try to speak without hesitation.
Ask yourself, “Do you like animals?”
When you’re done, listen to your recording, write down what you said, and think of one or two ways you could improve the answer.
Keep repeating this process and you’ll soon be ready to give a great band-seven answer to this one-part question in your IELTS Speaking test.
